Review of Spider-Man (1977) by John O — 19 Jul 2016
When I first saw the advertisements and heard the idea for this movie, I'll admit, I completely hated it. I thought it'd be just the same thing over and over again and the trailers turned me off to the film completely and my doubt it's tagline "The Untold Story", BUT I did my philosophy of "don't judge a film by it's trailers" (which are getting worse and worse in the means of accurately representing their respective films, with some occasional exceptions) and I went ahead and saw it.
When I left, my feelings towards it had completely spun 180 degrees. Ladies and Gentlemen, this film FAR surpasses the original Rami trilogy, I enjoyed this Peter Parker (played by Andrew Garfield) FAR more than in the Rami trilogy.
He's a much stronger, wittier, more relatable, and even smarter character. Also it lived true to it's tagline. This really is "The Untold Story". Just seeing what all the Rami trilogy left out / didn't do justice to, made my love for the old trilogy go down, and my newfound love of this film boost.
We have whole characters, such as Gwen Stacey, Dr. Curtis Conners, and PETER'S PARENTS that were shoved to the backseat (and represented rather poorly) in their brief mentions and/or appearances in the Rami trilogy.
We have a far more realistic, engaging, and emotional story, despite me knowing bits of the first part (I say bits because the beginning is a mix of the old story plus, a whole lot of brand new story I had never seen before).
The jokes are actually funny instead of cheesy and slightly annoying. The visual effects are superb! The love interest is actually just as smart as Peter, rather than the damsel in distress that seems to ALWAYS get into trouble.
Not to mention being portrayed by the lovely Emma Stone. This film completely proved me wrong in my skeptism, with it being a reboot of a trilogy that ended 5 years ago, I'd go as far to say this is something new entirely.
It had to nail it or it would've failed, and it nailed it! This film justifies it's existence and makes for an amazingly awesome movie. 5/5, and I entirely recommend it!
