Review of Spider Baby (1967) by Cathleen K — 15 Oct 2007
Greg says that this is like the Addams Family, if the Addams Family went beyond implication and actually straight up killed people. He may have a point.
This movie was extremely bizarre. Again, I don't normally go for the Something Weird style of film. (I'm aware that this isn't in Something Weird's catalogue...) But there was a certain amount of fun to this movie. Also, I was instantly pleased that there literally wasn't a spider baby. I hate spiders. I wasn't a big fan of when the tarantulas were on screen, but I can deal. So the idea of a baby composed of spider genetics didn't exactly thrill me. (Which is funny, because I super-dig Spider-Man.) But this was a cute-disturbing movie.
Yeah, yeah, a guy gets his ear cut off, but it wasn't too gross. It was actually kind of adorable. Maybe it's just the Halloween in me talking, but I kind of felt bad for Spider Baby and the fam. What's even more bizarre that I've seen more Sid Haig in the past three weeks than I have in my entire life. That's gotta be some kind of bizarre coincidence. Anyway, it's not a great film, but it is defintely a good watch.
