Review of Spider Baby (1967) by Holly C — 17 Apr 2009
The first of many "so bad they're good" exploitation flicks from Jack Hill ("Switchblade Sisters", "Foxy Brown") about a family with a rare degenerative brain disease.
After the patriarch of the family dies, a caretaker (Lon Cheney), whose relationship to the family is never really explained, looks after the eerie household. The trouble begins when distant cousins arrive to try and claim part of the family fortune.
This film has some really good bits of both genuine creepiness and unintentional comedy, but it doesn't quite reach the level of genre paradigm as Hill's later work. Watch for Sid Haig as an ominous, demented man-child.
