Review of Sphere (1998) by Anssi V — 13 Oct 2011
First of all, when I heard that they had found something at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, I was expecting at least a nod towards H.P. Lovecraft's work. It never came... And the rest of the movie didn't exactly please me either.
Though, yes, the main stars were decent actors, the special effects and settings were good for its time and for a mindless scifi/thriller I've seen worse. Still, there was way too much obvious foreshadowing, the exposition was done poorly, characters were killed just because the movie needed some of the characters to die for the sake of drama, the plot made no sense at all beyond "We have a monster in our hands, what should we do?" and even the acting started to droop towards the end.
Plus the ending solution... It was preachy, it was a cop-out, there was no rhyme or reason and I just didn't like it. But yes, I've seen worse movies, so if scifi/thrillers are your thing, you might want to give this one a watch.
