Review of Sphere (1998) by Vincent B — 23 Dec 2008
I haven't seen this in a while and it was on TV, but I remember it a good amount and how it was the biggest misuse of talent on every level. We have an A-list cast, the acting aint to bad though. We have Director Barry Levinson, who seems to only get worse with time.
I mean, he is good, being the man behind Rain Man, Bugsy, Sleepers, and Good Mourning Vietnam. But he has also done the shit referred to as Envy, Man of the Year, and Sphere. Sphere is not shit, it just has sooo much potential that it never reaches.
Everything could have been good. Good director, good actors, good source material (Michael Crichton novel). The idea was really cool and could have been a great movie (havent read the book, but also heard that it was a good one) but the screenplay was a bit weak and Levinson didn't utilize the visual prowless this movie required to be successful.
Lets just throw this into the vault of bad Michael Crichton adaptations (alongside The Godsend, Timeline, and Congo).
