Review of Sphere (1998) by James B — 09 Mar 2009
In my high school days I rather enjoyed Michael Chriction novels, and Sphere always held an early allure for me. Around Timeline I realized that he was then writing novels in a style that could easily be converted into scripts, and he lost his early charm.
I feel as if Sphere suffers for the opposite reason, for the novel worked well in structure and psychological working, but as a movie, the imagination of the reader was stifled. There is nothing wrong with the cast, or the movie as a whole, but it lacks some of the intensity, and the fear that is needed (despite settings and actions that mirror Ridley Scottâ??s Alien).
