Review of Sphere (1998) by Magill F — 02 Apr 2010
The second half of "Sphere" completely fails to live up to the first half, as the first hour or so of the film is both rivetting and thrilling, and moves at a perfect pace. Unfortunately, as the second act begins to kick in, the movie slows down considerably.
There's far too much chit-chat and scenes of everyone declaring who they can and can't trust - which all seems silly considering they're all trapped miles below the surface of the ocean. The story is strong, the performances are good, and it's a shame that the film sorta stumbles as it gets closer and closer to its conclusion.
But worse than that, and the greatest crime this movie commits, is that you never get to see the giant squid. What's the point of even having one in the movie if you don't get to see it? Major letdown.
Overall, it's just okay, but that first hour is great.
