Review of Sphere (1998) by Rodney C — 11 Dec 2012
Sphere isn't a very involving watch, but for simpletons it's likely the cast of name actors as a team of individuals from various professions (for instance, Hoffman is Norman Goodman, a psychologist; Stone is Beth Halperin, a marine biologist; Jackson is Harry Adams, a mathematician) working with the discovery of an underwater alien spacecraft is enough on the surface.
Random elements are thrown together and elements like a death-by-jellyfish scene (suffered by Queen Latifah in a relatively early role) and a never truly explained series of alien-origin possessions of and physical manifestations by the various members of the team are ultimately silly distractions from what could have been a far superior deep-diving sci-fi motion picture.
