Review of Sphere (1998) by Jonathan Y — 30 Nov 2008
A great idea in search of interesting characters and a believable story, Crichton's soggy undersea drama turns out to be yet another underwhelming sci-fi parable about how man just isn't ready to learn the universe's mysteries.
Why do so many of these movies promise to delve into the wonders of the unknown, but inevitably fall back on the boring 'lesson' that man shouldn't try to meddle with things he doesn't yet understand? Between this and the nature-amok opus of 'Jurassic Park', one can't help but feel that Crichton held a pretty dismal view of science.
