Review of Sphere (1998) by Alex B — 17 Dec 2007
Sphere is one movie, among few, that is actually better than its book. The chapter format is incredibly powerful, and the suspense is well crafted and amplified by an awesome score. It's an absolute mindfuck, which is probably why it stands as one of my all time favorites.
It's not Levinson's best work, by far, but the imaginative story is what really resonates with me. I'm normally not a fan of sci-fi but this film is enhanced with some deep, psychological bearing.
Plus it's an ensemble cast in total isolation, which is something that almost always pulls for great dramatic material. A good deal of the scenes were improvised. Very intense, mindboggling film.
