Review of Spencer (2021) by Calbear — 09 Nov 2021
If you care at all about plot, character development, or even audibility, avoid this film. We get a beautiful backdrop for Stewart to spend almost two hours hurriedly whispering to herself and others about whether or not she's going crazy under the pressure of public and private scrutiny.
The most captivating part - Timothy Spall's monologue - is also the most cliché. Near the end, we're reminded that everyone loved the princess, but this screenplay gives us little hint as to why. A mildly happy ending leaves the audience somewhat relieved on the way out.
.. until we remember that the real-life ending was anything but happy.
