Review of Spellbound (2002) by Tabitha J — 13 Dec 2006
The setting for this fantastic and utterly captivating documentary is the 1999 US Spelling Bee Nationals. From a field of 9 million, 240 gifted children compete for the promise of lucrative college scholarships beyond the reach of average americans.
The extreme close-ups of the young contestants is exquisite, yet excrutiating at the same time. The announcement of a word to be spelled can hit some entrants like a sledgehammer. For others, the sheer relief that dances across their face as recognition kicks in is a delight to witness.
