Review of Spellbound (2002) by Omar A — 23 Mar 2009
A highly entertaining look into the lives of eight contestants in the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The kids that the film focuses on come from all different walks of life all around the country, and the most fascinating part is just seeing how each family deals with the pressures of making it to the national finals.
Of course, these are highly intelligent, pre-adolescent kids, so many of them have their eccentricities and social idiosyncracies which make the story even more engaging. The scene where Harry takes like 10 minutes trying to spell a word and thinking out loud into the microphone is hilarious.
I've always kind of wondered what life is like for these kids leading up to the Bee, and this film does a great job of showing what it's like for many of them.
