Review of Speed Racer (2008) by Max E — 26 Jul 2011
A kaleidoscopic pop-art assault that never lets up, even during the quiet scenes. The closest thing I can compare it to is Dick Tracy as far as visual style. But even Dick Tracy wasn't this ambitious.
A lot of people will dismiss it as the product of an eight-year-old boy on a bad acid trip, but they would be missing the point entirely. There is plenty of excitement and action, but there is also a warmth underneath it that champions the family dynamic through and through.
Great performances by Emile Hirsch as Speed, John Goodman as Pops and especially Matthew Fox as a dead-on Racer X. The effects work was much easier to swallow than Transformers and I think The Wachowskis deliver here with another fun film with plenty to offer for anyone even remotely interested in seeing it.
I had a big goofy grin on my face nearly the whole time and I'm not even a fan of the show.
