Review of Speed (1994) by Ryan P — 02 Jan 2013
OVERRATED.
It has a nice concept and all (stolen from ''Die Hard''), but the performances (due to writing and casting I suppose) were way too cheesy for me. Honestly, there was a stupid line being said every 2 minutes or so (there's only *that much* of Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock -- both of whom I think are dreadful actors -- that can be tolerated. Dennis Hopper easily had the best performance in the film, though I don't find it to be a very memorable one). Some plot developments, like the bus making a turn at full throttle or jumping a uncompleted bridge (with a considerable distance gap mind you) -- followed by everyone cheering at defying those laws of physics, were just plain insulting to me. I mean... it just took its implausibilities way too seriously for my liking (which would of been fine if I could have embraced the characters. ''Face/Off,'' for example, is probably my favourite action movie of all time --- it also had a clever premise, and the plot details were just as dumb, but at least the 2 great lead performances in that one made it FUN). I remember loving this movie as a kid, and I really wanted to maintain that nostalgia, but I can't bring myself to it. I just flat out hate it now. A time wasting thriller... nah, actually, a waste of time. But that's just, like, uh, my opinion, man.
