Review of Speed (1994) by Sterling W — 11 Jan 2011
A crazed former cop places a bomb on a bus that is set to explode once the bus goes below 50 miles per hour. A young hot shot cop has to get on the bus and either disarm it or get the passengers off before it blows up.
Not familiar? Well this ride is called "Speed", or in other words, "Die Hard on a Bus." However, what makes "Speed" so much different than the other Die Hard clones is that it is actually just as good as "Die Hard", if not better.
Directed by Jan de Bont (who was the cinematographer for the original Die Hard), "Speed" maybe the fastest action-film ever made. It starts out with a suspenseful elevator rescue, the quickly jumps to a bus, then to a train.
The cast is game here as well. Keanu Reeves radiates a quiet confidence as the film's hero, while Dennis Hopper makes a memorable villain. Sandra Bullock steals the show as a passenger thrust in to action.
This film will stand the test of time and ranks among the best in its genre.
