Review of Spectre (2015) by Nelson B — 16 Feb 2016
Man, I really hope we get Christoph Waltz in more Bond films, he's such a great Bond villain. That said, he's the best part of this film (Though he only comes into play in the last act) . There are three strong sequences in the film (The opening, that train fight, and the lead-up to the final confrontation with Waltz) with the opening sequence being likely the strongest sequence in this film (It's all about that tracking shot).
I also thought that Lea Seydoux made for a pretty good Bond girl. It starts strong and ends a bit shakily but ok, but the middle kind of wobbles around aimlessly and the story this time around is all over the place without a clear sense of purpose or direction (There's also an annoying and too on-the-nose subplot about intelligence surveillance).
There's also only a few action scenes that work, some fell flat for me (surprisingly). I will say the film constantly looked beautiful though (Thanks Hoyte Van Hoytema). In the end, Spectre can't reach the heights of Skyfall, but it's still a good Bond film that is fun, entertaining, mysterious, interesting and dark.
