Review of Spectre (2015) by David J — 20 May 2016
Spectre is the 4th and reputed final film in Daniel Craig's amazing run as 007, and the film is solid and overall a touch disappointing. Bond goes on his own agenda on this one and sets to rid the world of the shadowy organization known as Spectre.
The acting is once again spot-on from the entire cast, and there is no shortage of sharp lines and captivating action. Though the film can be faulted for a somewhat lazy "I am responsible for the last few bad guys in previous movies" twist, the biggest sins committed by the film was the overall quality of the villain and the girl.
Lea Seydoux does a good job acting, but her character is in many ways clearly ripped from Casino Royale's Vesper Lynd, yet she doesn't have nearly the same depth and intrigue. Christoph Waltz is a good actor, but for being a "boss" villain, he wasn't creepy, clever, or seemingly dangerous at all. He was just really smug and was thwarted because he made a lot of foolish decisions. He doesn't compare to Le Chiffre or Silva.
Spectre is a fine movie and it is marginally better than Quantum Of Solace, but the two aforementioned flaws are enormous, and Spectre will never measure up to Skyfall ad Casino Royale in any positive fashion.
