Review of Spectre (2015) by Ian B — 30 Nov 2017
Skyfall was always going to be tough to top, and Spectre succeeds because it doesn't try to. Throughout Daniel Craig's era we've seen him gradually evolve into the Bond generations of fans are familiar with.
I've always liked Craig as Bond, and I was happy to see he's now comfortable enough in the role to bring some lightness and humour to the character. I know some people won't like it, but the 100% pissed off all the time Bond from the previous films is gone.
As a Bond film, Spectre mostly delivers. Terrific action, amazing stunts, beautiful locations, style, gadgets. What hurts the film most is it's length. They could've easily cut 20 minutes out to tighten up the pace.
It was also disappointing to see Dave Bautista so sorely underused... and there's also the laughably bad twist of having Bond and Blofeld growing up together. Aside from those few minor issues, I had a lot of fun with Spectre.
Some people won't like the lighter tone, but I found it a refreshing throwback, and I think those who grew up watching Bond will find a lot more to like than those who didn't.
