Review of Spectre (2015) by John S — 02 Apr 2016
I really wanted to love this 24th installment of the Bond franchise. Coming off the success of "Skyfall", expectations were sky high. I really like how the "gun barrel" opening was put back at the beginning of the movie.
The opening "Dia de los Muertos" scene in Mexico City was great & the car chase vs Batista in Rome was decent. However, the setup of SPECTRE felt a bit underwhelming & that's a shame, especially with all the legal battles vs the McClory estate.
I really like Christoph Waltz as an actor & what he's done in Tarantino movies, but his performance lacked the "je ne sais quoi" that Javier Bardem had in the last film. What made "Skyfall" great was the emotion that you felt imagining a kid James becoming an orphan & losing a motherly figure in "M".
SPECTRE had none of that. Hopefully, Daniel Craig returns & can deliver what he brought to the role in "Casino Royale" & "Skyfall". If not, a new actor & director can bring a fresh take to "Bond 25".
