Review of Spectre (2015) by Russell S — 28 Jan 2017
Spectre is the first Daniel Craig Bond episode that doesn't feel entirely fresh. The simple fact is for a 50-something year old franchise, continuity problems have become quite noticeable in Bond's narrative thread.
The fact that Bond is (spoiler) 'meeting Blofeld' in this movie is pointless to even address and besides, isn't this part of a 'reboot' for the series? That fact alone renders a great part of 007 history meaningless.
The movie itself is a worthy enough effort but after the sheer visceral and emotive punch of Skyfall, it can't help but fall a little flat. Italian actress Monica Bellucci may be a welcome casting choice in terms of reversing the ageist ideal of the Bond girl but what's the point when her one scene is edited down to a virtual cameo?.
Spectre, I feel doesn't live up to the promise shown on Skyfall and to be honest, it feels quite murky and claustrophobic. It only really functions as a movie that wraps up the storyline that began with the excellent Casino Royale.
Good overall but not one for the ages.
