Yes, those 4 stars are real.
Species II may be my new favorite movie. Itâ??s got everything a girl could want: not too shabby acting, gruesome alien birth scenes, pre-CSI Catherine Willows, jarring cameos (Detective John Munch from Law and Order as the President of the United States!), plenty of fake science, an absurdly dramatic musical score, subtle jokes about Bill Clinton, X-Files references, ridiculous product placement, and a half-assed cliffhanger ending.
A few things Iâ??d like to discuss in more detail: First, the musical score. At one point in the movie, when the lady Species is running away and being shot a lot, Iâ??m pretty sure I heard the Batman theme from the 80s Tim Burton Batmans.
Second, Catherine Willows. Her clothes are terrible. Donâ??t believe me? She spends more than half the movie in Keds. Other than that, she is totally just Catherine Willows. Probably 90% of her dialogue could have been in CSI. She even talks about the â??chrysalis stageâ?? and taking samples back to the lab, and she participates in not only an autopsy scene, but also an interrogation scene and a struggle-for-power/sexual-tension-argument-with-a colleague scene, all of which are staples of CSI and in all of which she does the exact same style of acting.
One thing that could have been better, though? Liev Schreiber would have been more effective as the astronaut. But he would make almost any movie better.
Anyway, Species II is better than the first one (maybe because Catherine Willows has a better haircut in this one), and sadly, it is easily in the top 5 best movies Iâ??ve seen this summer.
