Review of Species (1995) by Alan D — 02 Dec 2009
Species for me, is a bit of a guilty pleasure. Why? well in all honesty its a clumsy film, grazing over certain points and events, that don't leave you confused, but do leave you feeling a little indifferent about what's going on in front of you.
In terms of direction silly things like the boom being reflected in the window just add to the films over all shoddiness, but for all of its faults Species was the only film of the 90's that came to close to recreating that "monster madness" of the 70's and 80's.
Gone where the icons like "The Thing" and "The Fly" and nothing had come close to filling that void for a long time. By no means am I saying that "Sil" stands up the greats, but it does satisfy those who have a gratuitous need for gore and over the top Alien rubbish.
Chocked and tossed around by the studio system, its hard to blame it for its faults and unoriginality. Its enjoyable and will satisfy some, but if you want a real sci fi monster romp, look back at the previous films I mentioned.
