I thought this movie was pretty straight. It does lose it's scariness once you grow up though (I was about 11 when it came out.). The visual effects were good until the showdown at the end with the CG alien-Sil in the oil cave; it looked like something from a "Sci-Fi Original Movie" what with the corny-looking CG.
