Review of Special (1967) by Marion R — 05 Jan 2009
A movie about a man who thinks he is a superhero - and it completely plays it straight. The premise sounds like a dumb comedy, but it's actually a very sad movie about a poor schmuck of a human being who thinks that, for once in his life, he is unique and, well, special.
It's a bit funny at times, but they are usually laughs of pity for the character, not at the character. The only negative aspect of the film are its "supervillians," which come off as cartoonishly evil at times when they should be more grounded in the reality of the film.
Other than that though, a great indie accomplishment.
