This type of movie is right up my alley, indie film with some good buzz, creative story, strong practical effects, a "lovable loser" story, a mix of comedy with an overarching message ... or so I thought. A lack of purpose holds "Special" back from the indie classic it could have become. Put simply the film is depressing when it didn't need to be. Many would commend "Special" for not taking the obvious route for this movie, a message that "everyone is special"or at least special in their own small way. As the movie continues, it becomes clear that the real message is that "no one is special" or at least most people aren't.

It is depressing to sit through the entire movie and watch this character suffer, just to learn that life sucks for everyone and through that misery we must take some solace in each other. Les, Michael Rapaport's character, is put through more mental and physical torture than such a nice, humble character deserves. The film technique even pushes this beat down feeling, with lots of close-ups on Les' beaten face.

The film is worth watching for Rapaport's great performance here. As someone who was never a fan of his mumble-mouthed style, he easily transcends his normal method here and becomes something to root for. You can see the pain and confusion in his eyes as he is put through his paces.

"Special" is a drama through and through, with most of the comedy relegated to the first 20 minutes and takes a more serious tone as the laughably sadistic "suits" take a bigger and bigger role. I would recommend this film for a unique take on the indie film genre, moreso than a unique take on the superhero genre.
