Review of Speak (2004) by Alice S — 17 Jun 2010
The summer before she enters high school, something bad happens to Melinda Sordino, something that transforms her from a normal, friendly teen into a depressed outcast who hardly speaks. Over the course of the school year, through art and her own resolve, she discovers a stronger voice than she ever had before.
A 14-year-old Kristin Stewart shines as Melinda. Steve Zahn, as art teacher Mr. Freeman, is the strongest link in a solid ancillary cast.
Much credit goes to "Speak" novelist Laurie Halse Anderson, screenplay writer and director Jessica Sharzer, and screenplay writer Annie Young Frisbie for perfectly capturing both the angst of high school and the anguish of depression.
No new ground is broken here, just a story beautifully told. I think thatâ??s worth ****/*****, if not a bit more.
