Review of Spawn (1997) by Murder C — 08 May 2011
Based on Todd McFarlane's comic book with the same name, in "Spawn" we find Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) a top assassin working for the government. But when Al decides to quit, he gets sent out to one final mission that turns out to be a set-up by his boss Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen).
Wynn kills Al and with that sends him to hell. In hell Al makes a deal with the devil, becomes 'Spawn', gets sent back to earth and with his new superpowers goes out for revenge. Now, this movie does not even come near the greatness of the comic book, it just hasn't got that dark feeling that makes the comic so great.
Still, not comparing too much on the comics "Spawn" the movie has some good action and is pretty entertaining. Sure, the ending is really confusing, weird and just sloppy written. But Michael Jai White is decent as Spawn and John Leguizamo steals the show as the evil 'Clown'.
If you like comic book movies, "Spawn" is worth checking out.
