Review of Spartan (2004) by Melanie-Ann D — 28 Dec 2010
David Mamet, what were you thinking?? If I wrote a script as bad as this, I would be too ashamed to put my name to it. Boy, was I disappointed in this one! It's B-grade schlock that deserves only to be shown late at night on the Action Channels.
Val Kilmer really plumbs the depths with this one, putting in a very bad John Travolta impersonation. The ever reliable William H Macy phones in a performance that came straight from "Air Force One".
Mr Macy would really rethink his loyalty to David Mamet if he's to appear in rubbish like this. The script is dire and Val Kilmer sounds as if he's reading straight off cue cards. The female parts are relegated to the idiotically behaved daughter of the President and a clichà (C)d military side-kick and any movie that has "Al Bundy" as president is pushing the limit.
