Review of Sparkle (2012) by Maridia B — 25 Aug 2012
I had told my friend Scott that I wasn't going to review this film (Sparkle) but after reading Roger Ebert's review I feel compelled. It was his line that "I was never bored" that got my goat. This was a boring film. It was poorly written and badly conceived.
The directing was suitable for Lifetime but certainly not for the big screen. Whitney Houston was not at her best either as an actress nor as a singer. And her prophetic line to her daughters: "Was my life not enough of a cautionary tale for you?" was a dark reminder of her own life and passing. AND there wasn't even a nod to Whitney Houston in the credits either acknowledging her passing nor dedicating the film to her.
The acting by the supporting characters is quite good - but the name of the movie is "Sparkle" and Jordon Sparks doesn't have the acting chops to be the lead character - so they wrote her in as a secondary character. This is a stinker and Roger Ebert continues to disappoint as the most sympathetic movie reviewer of all time. There is no way that this movie deserves the 3 stars he rated it.
