Review of Sparkle (2012) by Dan R — 16 Dec 2012
It's hard film to review because you can't totally appreciate the campiness and bad acting as it carries the dark burden of being Whitney Houston's last project. But the acting is mostly bad and funny.
Jordan Sparks is terrible. There is a heavy emoting scene with her and the underrated Derek Luke and he outshines her at every moment. Also the actress who plays Sister (yes that's her name) has some chops.
Hopefully she can get some better projects. Then there are the scenes with Whitney Houston. She was never a great actress, but this world worn role suits her well. There is a scene in which she sings a song that actually made me tear up a little in a movie that no one should be crying over.
It made me think of what a waste it was that her life ended so tragically. If what she did in this movie was the beginning what she had in store for us, then I would have liked to have seen her third act.
Sadly, it is not to be.
