Before Dreamgirls, there was Sparkle. The story is of three sisters from a poor urban area trying to make it big in showbusiess and they do at a cost. The story is a very dark and is probably a truer tale in what you have to sell of yourself to make it. It is very gritty and the songs are fantastic thanks to Curtis Mayfield. The songs are so good that En Vogue would record two of the songs on their hit album 'Funky Divas' Here in the UK, the DVD is available for £4.97 which is a steal.

The film was one of the inspirations for the stage show of Dreamgirls but this is where the comparisons really end. If you like the grittiness of Fame with a great 70's urban music, you should check this fim out. The acting is very well done but it is not a feel good movie but more of an essay on the price of stardom.
