It's David O. Russell's first outing as writer/director. Sometimes this fact shows. This is by no means a perfect film, but tackling the whole Oedipal relation is a bold move for any artist, and I think Russell does this without trivializing it or blowing it out of proportion.
He displays it as it is. That is what counts.
