Review of Spanking the Monkey (1994) by Ian M — 01 Sep 2010
I didn't like this movie. It's not the weird parts either. I thought the disturbing scenes were well directed. I had two problems with this movie. First, there was no real fluidity from scene to scene.
It didn't play consistently smooth as I'd have liked. Second, to me a black comedy is supposed to mix in the discomfort with laughter, creating an even weirder discomfort. There was not much "comedy" to the "blackness.
" Take Dr. Strangelove. It worked because it made you laugh while looking at global level destruction. This movie, however, used up all it's humor in the title scene and the aunts' scenes.
Just not impressed.
