Review of Spanglish (2004) by Steve S — 28 Mar 2010
*** (out of four).
I'm not a huge Adam Sandler fan, though he has occasionally shown some promise with films like "Punch Drunk Love" and "Funny People". "Spanglish" does show some effort on his part to play something a little different.
Director James L. Brooks has mastered the fine tuned, romantic comedy/drama with films like "Terms of Endearment", "Broadcast News" and "As Good As It Gets". This one doesn't match any of those other films, but it is still a fairly well told tale with some nice moments.
Sandler plays a well know chef. At home he has to deal with his highly strung wife(Tea Leonoi) and her mother (Cloris Leachman). He hires a hispanic nanny for his child and she brings more than just cleaning skills to the family.
