Review of Spanglish (2004) by Steve A — 30 Jan 2012
Spanglish is a movie that thinks it is an Oscar contender drama. There are even lots of dare I say terrific performances, but when you look at the movie as a whole it is a complete waste of time.
The movie stars Adam Sandler as a loving father who works as a chef and lives with his family in California. The biggest plot point from the beginning to this part is when we finally meet the family's new house maid Flor who doesn't speak any English, and her daughter who does. And throughout the rest of the movie the characters interact with each other and English/Spanish translations are made and so fourth.
Eventually the movie just becomes really uninteresting and (as I said before) feels like a complete waste of time. The ending was so unsatisfying I had to rewind the movie to see if I had just missed something. Everything just makes the film feel really dull, forgettable and one-noted.
