Review of Spaced Invaders (1990) by Dann M — 17 Dec 2018
"Prepare to die Earth scum!" A wacky family comedy, Spaced Invaders is kind of fun but is a little too slap-sticky for most audiences. After misinterpreting an old rebroadcast of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds radio drama on Halloween a Martian spaceship comes to Earth to join the invasion.
It's actually a rather clever setup, ripe for a fish-out-of-water comedy. But the writing is really bad; the Martians are constantly doing Three Stooges-ish routines and making lame jokes. And the puppet work on the Martians (specifically the mouth and facial movements) isn't very good.
Still, the creature designs have a retro '50s sci-fi sort of charm and some of the humor works. Yet while it delivers a few laughs, overall Spaced Invaders is a poorly made and incredibly corny kids' film.
