Review of Spaceballs (1987) by Andreia B — 18 Jun 2011
This is one of those "love it" or "hate it" movies for sure. But c'mon, Mel Brooks has such ridiculous comedic taste that even the silliest and dopiest scenes are awesome. Whether its breaking the fourth wall, or being satirical with its own self-parody of a parody (Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money), the self-deprecating stab at selling merchandise in his own movie, Mel Brooks simply creates comedy from nothing, all by parodying Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien and Transformers!
My favourite scene? Has to be the part when Coloniel Sanders uses the advanced VHS movie release of Spaceballs to track down where Lone Starr is hiding by fast forwarding ahead a few scenes. Instead, they stop the tape on exactly the part of the movie they're currently filming. Stupid? Yes. Entertaining?! Abso-frickin'-lutely!!
The movie is deliberately over-acted, probably as a potshot to all the Star Wars movies featuring underacting (aside from Han Solo). Bill Pullman was very good at this, especially when announcing to the whole ship he was going into "hyperactive".
Mel Brooks is great as President Scroob, sniffing his Perri-Air, and Rick Moranis is the shit as Dark Helmet. All the sexual innuendo added, along with the cussing, makes this your uncle's badass version of Star Wars.
