Review of Spaceballs (1987) by Jeffrey S — 17 Apr 2012
(5 Stars) I can't decide what the best film spoof of all time is: Spaceballs or Airplane!. But Spaceballs is the definitive send-up of Star Wars and science fiction and my favorite Mel Brooks film (which is quite a statement considering his extremely funny filmography). I think EVERY single gag works; every joke makes me laugh uncontrollably or smile. Every character is fantastic lampoon of a Star Wars character and each have many quotable lines. Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) is one of the FUNNIEST characters I've ever seen in a film: he's a tragic nerd, his suit is funny, his dialogue is hysterical, and his helmet is SOOOOO big. I will always remember Moranis as Dark Helmet and how much he made me laugh. President Skroob (Mel Brooks) is a hysterical bastard and I think Brooks wrote himself the best lines. Barf the Mawg (John Candy) is a great sidekick to Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and I love the caricatures to Princess Leia and C-3P0 in Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) and Dot Matrix.
I love the fourth-wall and self aware humor, I love the Alien gag featuring John Hurt, I love it all. I think THIS is how to make a successful spoof that is still funny years later. Spaceballs is easily one of my favorite films of all time. Everyone who has or has not seen Star Wars will love it.
