Review of Spaceballs (1987) by Shane D — 04 Jun 2014

Easily the best and most accessible of Mel Brooks' films (sorry Saddles fans). I watched this 100 times as a kid and have watched it on repeat every year or so since. It contains some of the most memorable and hilarious moments from my childhood cinephile beginnings.

There is just so much joy to be had throughout. John Candy shines in his second best performance behind 'Planes, Trains', Brooks is great, Rick Moranis only makes us wish he hadn't retired almost 20 years ago and George Wyner's 'Colonel' is and always has been my favourite character from the film.

I could sit and quote from this film all night long and anyone who expresses a shared love for it instantly wins me over. Even though it is essentially a spoof film, it almost transcends its original intention and stands up entirely separate from those films it attempts to poke fun at.
