Review of Spaceballs (1987) by Christoph M — 18 Jun 2011
The problem with spoofs is that they often confuse making fun of something with making something funny. Just because you're making fun of something doesn't necessarily mean you're being funny. This movie falls squarely into that category. Most of it's gags fall flat and even it's best spoof moments (ie Pizza the Hut) only bring mild amusement. You may smile now and then but rarely laugh out loud. Honestly most of the humor seems very forced. It doesn't flow naturally as it does with the king of all spoofs, Airplane.
The real tragedy is that, as any Star Wars fan knows, there is so much in Star Wars that can be made fun of (see Family Guy's Star Wars spoof, Blue Harvest) that this movie rarely even grazes the surface of. There is so much potential for humor. I don't understand how this movie so utterly misses so much of it.
Ultimately this is a spoof that misses most of it's spoof opportunities and settles instead for random gags that are often more irritating than funny. Shame. I really wanted to like this movie too.
