Review of Space Truckers (1996) by Oliver B — 01 Jan 2011
Once it gets going this is a pretty fun movie it just has some bumps in the road that stop it been a fantastic space romp. The cast are fine but not very appealing. Hopper seems restrained while everyone else is just there really aside from charles dance who is fantastic as a half cyborg genius channeling riff raff form the rocky horror show! Pure camp genius and loads of fun to watch.
A very slow start means when the action does kick in it jolts you up. When the wreckers kidnap hopper and crew its pretty much none stop from there and is incredibly entertaining from this point on up till the sugar coated and sweet ending which spoils it abit.
Some great action scenes and some suprisngly tense scenes involving the ultimate robot killing machines who not only look amazing move and react very much like the xenomorphs from alien and are hugely effective.
Some of the space scenes look like black board back ground but ive found most movies from before 2000 suffer from this anyway and it hardly takes the fun away from the picture. If the main cast were a wee bit more engaging and the action picked up a little bit sooner this would be a fantastic romp.
But it feels like its been restrained, like theres something missing. An 18 cert and this film could have really let loose! A cracking way to burn away an hour and half and the world it creates is quite an interesting and engaging one so why not nip in and see what you think :).
