Review of Space Jam (1996) by Matthew C — 23 Mar 2013

If I'm going to do an honest review of this movie I can't be blinded by the nostalgia that is me and every single one of my friends's childhood other wise this movie would have five stars. But from an honest critical perspective Space Jam could be a lot better.

Michael Jordan was definitely just a cash out to help make this movie get Warner Bros. more money even though it does tell a fun twist on his retirement. As for the Looney Tunes I'm sure they were the central claim when pitching this movie (and probably one of the main reasons I love it so freakin much, besides Wayne Knight) but them, the Monstars, and Moron Mountain all seem like side stories rather than the main, after all the movie is called Space Jam with a design similar to the Loony Tunes title card.

But it really feels more like "Michael Jordan's Story of His Retirement Oh Yeah and He Plays Basketball With the Looney Tunes Jam". If this is a Looney Tunes movie why does it feel like a Michael Jordan movie with Bugs Bunny in it (which I still find hilarious).

I could go on for a whole page with the list of things wrong with this movie, The acting was not that great, Michael looked so awkward when he was acting with the Tunes (no one), they played the same 4 songs about 7 times through out the whole movie (Come on and Slam!), Bill Murray decides to show up at the end of the movie but does absolutely nothing to help ("I didn't know Dan Akroyd was in the picture.

"), and I love every minute of it. Now that I've grown up and I watch movies and see what's done wrong and what's done right, Space Jam was a lot of wrongs. But even if Space Jam is far from perfect or even being a true Looney Tunes movie it still has a special place in my heart.
