Review of Space Jam (1996) by Phil P — 29 Oct 2012
"Please! What kind of Mickey Mouse organization would name their team The Ducks?.".
I hadn't watched this film in years a good 10 or more so I wasn't sure whether I still liked it. So it was on TV and I decided I need to watch it, see if it was still good.
I can say it is, it may not be as good as I remember (then again I was a lot younger.) But it's still good.
'Space Jam' is in the vein of 'Who framed roger rabbit' but succeeds to a much lesser extent. The plot is a simple one 'Michael Jordan' helps the 'Looney Tunes' win a basketball game to stop the monsters from holding them prisoner.
It's very basic and at times is incredibly boring but the plot isn't what makes this film its the last 1hr and every scene with the 'Looney Tunes' in. It's not classic 'Looney Tunes' but it is still funny.
However, Bugs's voice is a bit off it sounded odd which is surprising given how good 'Billy West' is. The basketball players are unsurprisingly bad actors, so are Jordan's kids.
'Space Jam' is another attempt at merging animation with live-action and it mostly succeeds with the odd animation blip and some dodgy acting. It may not be the childhood classic that it was meant to be but it's still a solid film.
