Review of Space Jam (1996) by Gerry P — 16 Oct 2012
As a kid, I used to watch this film over and over and over again. I was OBSESSED with it. Now at the age of 24, I still like it but there are many things I hate about it.
1. Michael Jordan and the other basketball players' acting is wooden. They probably said no to this movie, but there was probably big paychecks for them. I suppose they had no choice. I admire them as basketball players, but actors, they're not.
2. The live action scenes will bore kids. I was bored by these scenes as a kid. As an adult, not so much. They go on forever and as the kids are yelling "Where's the Looney Tunes?".
3. The scene where the Monstars mold Michael into a ball is just CREEPY! Why is his voice high pitched? It's just disturbing. Even on the big screen, I was freaked out by this scene. The CGI doesn't hold up well.
4. The "Secret stuff" scene is pointless. What was the point of that? Honestly?
5. Besides Bugs, Daffy and probably Lola, we don't get to know the other Tunes that well. They're just there for the sake of being part of the Looney Tunes family.
Another thing I want to know is that when the Nerdlucks get laughed at by the Tunes, Daffy gets up and walks away and Sylvester follows him. Why?
Also, when in the scene where the clean up the dreadful looking gym, Daffy yells "Spit shine" and then Sylvester yells "Spit shine." Why? Is he trying to copy Daffy? Or is it just a case of lazy film making?
6. In the scene where Michael gets sucked into the golf hole. Larry Bird and Bill Murray aren't freaked out by this. Why? They don't question what happened or where did he go, they just leave the golf club as if nothing happened. Aren't they wondering what they should tell Michael's family if they want to know where he is.
Also, Michael's family doesn't seem bothered. they don't hire the police to come looking for him. Shouldn't the wife be worried? Maybe she's having an affair and is glad Michael's gone.
7. The scene where the Nerdlucks meet Bugs Bunny and don't know who he is. Errrr...... how can they not know who he is IF THEY ALREADY KNOW WHO THE LOONEY TUNES ARE?! Was this film made from the first draft?
Now I got all the bad stuff off my chest, here's the good stuff:
1. The basketball scenes are fun to watch. I don't why but I love that arena.
2. Bugs Bunny. He will be forever my favourite Looney Tunes character. He's a great character to put beside Michael Jordan on his mission.
3. The animation is great.
4. The soundtrack. We've all heard "I believe I can fly" a million times. But to me, Seal's "Fly like an eagle" is may favourite of the soundtrack. Even if you hate this film, you have to admit it's cool.
5. Bill Murray. He's always fun to watch. I mentioned in my Ghostbusters 2 review, that he saved that movie.
Overall, despite it's flaws, Space Jam is a fun 90's movie. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" is far superior though. This movie is like Roger Rabbit's much younger brother.
By the way, I have nothing bad to say about Lola Bunny. Although she was just a typical love interest for Bugs. Nothing more.
