Review of Space Cowboys (2000) by Luis N — 09 Nov 2011
Pretty good from the start (although the weird blue tone that it was filmed in to indicate age was totally unnecessary). It's a great idea for a story, but there are three main issues I have with it.
..the first one is its length. This film is just over 2 hours, but it feels like much longer, and not in a good way. It feels like its easily 3 hours long just because there are a lot of scenes where nothing is going on and they're just having a conversation.
My second issue is that this film is just way too cliche'd to be enjoyable during some scenes...every joke about old age is made in some way or another. While this is somewhat humorous at the beginning of the film, two -plus hours of this is just unnecessary.
Additionally, these jokes just start to get depressing after awhile once that fact that one of the characters is dying is revealed. The fact that the rest of the characters, who were the best of the best back in the day (and possibly still are) aren't far behind isn't a pretty thought either.
The film also makes light of the character's death at the end, basically saying to the audience, "well, he's dead, but at least he got to the moon." That's like the bad line at the end of a Honeymooners episode lol; that's something you say to a five year-old to get them to stop crying.
This is not an acceptable ending to a movie...and the upbeat music they play during this sequence just leaves me saying WTF?
