Review of Soylent Green (1973) by Nick R — 31 Jul 2010
Soylent Green is a futuristic movie about a cop and the discoveries that he makes. This movie is a classic of this genre and must be watched. I finally broke down and saw it and so must you.
There are several things I liked about this flick and one thing I didn't. I am not a huge fan of Charlton Heston. I am not sure he is really a good actor. I think they just put him in roles that he can handle, kinda like Keanu Reeves or Nicolas Cage. Heston didn't ruin this movie though. I was worried he would.
One of the things I liked was that it was set in a future where the food supply had been exhausted. The people live on eating algae; soylent red, orange, and green. Very cool idea.
The second thing I liked was the blatant misogyny. Apartments came fully furnished, including a women for domestic duties and sexual obedience. What kind of events lead to a future like this? The women are referred to as furniture. Crazy concept.
The last thing I liked was the complete control of the masses and the disregard for civil rights. This is a constant in sci-fi movies. The intelligent rule and the lesser people suffer. This is the easiest idea to wrap our brains around. We can see ourselves headed here.
