Review of Soylent Green (1973) by Noe — 27 May 2008
I was really worried that as I am closer to the time the movie was set (14 years) than I am to the year it was made (35 years), that it would have aged very, very poorly. Luckily, I was wrong. This movie was at its best when it was being subtle.
And this movie was GOOD at being subtle. Early on, I asked myself, "if this is set in the future, then why is he using a pencil?" The movie answered that with a character using a stationary bicycle to charge a lightbulb.
The movie was really good at doing these little clues to the keen observer, and it made me that much more happy to watch it. The big finale was SO two-by-four obvious, that I wondered why the movie bothered being so sneaky and subtle for the first hour and a half.
But, yes, a classic. Really good, all should see.
