Review of Soylent Green (1973) by Sam D — 06 Apr 2009
Mixed feelings about this one, I love 70s sci-fi and, by association, Charlton Heston, and this atmospheric example of the genre has some great ideas that are worryingly still relevant 30 years later. Edward G.
Robinson is always brilliant to watch and his moving performance lends a little gravitas to Heston's more hammy (in a good way?) acting. Unfortunately, as many other reviewers have pointed out, knowing the film's twist does take away some of the punch that the story would otherwise have had - but the final scenes are still pretty haunting.
What I don't like about the movie are the female characters - they're all pretty pathetic and there's not a one you can relate to or sympathise with.
