Review of Southside with You (2016) by Matt D — 27 Aug 2016
As off-putting as the commercials for this movie might be, the actual film is a delight.
Parker Sawyers delivers a wonderful and at time uncanny performance of our future president and in many ways I'd love to see him continue the roll in further chapters of the President's life.
Tika Sumpter as Michelle is a little less convincing though. Her performance seems to rely too heavily on trying to impersonate the First Lady rather than ever falling into natural speaking patterns. It is distracting and occasionally worsens thanks to a screenplay that sometimes lacks subtlety.
But in the end this is a highly charming slice of life film that further humanizes a historic couple in a unique and wonderful way.
